What is a Numerace?

Numerace is a free, 30-minute online math competition for grades 3–7 where the whole class solves problems as one team.

We run several events per year. During competition week, you can run a 30-minute Numerace at any time, with separate sessions for one or more classes.

The whole class competes as one team against other classes, with one shared score, so every student can contribute to the final result.

How to run a Numerace in your classroom

Create a free teacher account and RSVP for the Numeraces you would like to join in the teacher dashboard.

Preview the problems

Preview the tasks

Open the Demo to see the kinds of problems your students will get in the upcoming competition.

Set up your sessions

Create a session for each class and choose an Easy or Medium problem board. You can run multiple sessions during competition week.

Numerace!

Once the event is live, launch a session from your dashboard. Students join with a class code, like in Kahoot—no accounts needed.

Explore the results and solutions

After event ends, we publish the solutions and results on our site. Review the problems together and celebrate your class’s progress!

Frequently asked questions

Is it free?

Yes. Numeraces are free for teachers and schools.

How long does a Numerace take?

A Numerace session is 30 minutes. You can run it at any time during competition week and end the session earlier if needed.

What technology do I need in my classroom?

You need one teacher device and several student devices with a web browser, such as Chromebooks or iPads.

What if I have fewer devices than students?

That’s fine. Students can work in groups, depending on how many devices are available.

Do students need accounts?

No. Students join with a class code and play anonymously using automatically generated nicknames.

Can I run more than one session?

Yes. You can create as many sessions as you need for different classes, groups, or teams during Numerace week.

What grades are Numeraces designed for?

Numeraces are designed for Grades 3–7, but teachers are welcome to use them with other grade levels. You can choose an Easy or Medium problem set for each session.

Do students need to prepare?

No preparation is required. You can also try the Demo for the upcoming Numerace with your class before competition week, so students know what to expect.
